Lieutenant General (ret.) George Smith joined TRG after serving over 38 years as a Marine officer. He is the founder and CEO of BROADSWORD Leadership, LLC, a leadership consulting firm and serves on multiple public and nonprofit boards, to include as the Chairman of The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.
A career infantry and reconnaissance officer, he commanded 1st Force Reconnaissance Company as a Lieutenant Colonel over two deployments to Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in the Anbar Province, Iraq. As a Colonel, he commanded The Basic School in Quantico, VA where he was responsible for instilling the timeless fundamentals of leadership and officership in every newly commissioned Marine officer.
His 12 years of service as a General Officer included assignments as Deputy Commander, Regional Command Southwest in Helmand Province, Afghanistan; Director, Strategy, Plans & Policy, U.S. Central Command where he led the combatant command’s strategic planning for the defeat of ISIS; and Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies and Operations at Headquarters, Marine Corps, where he was responsible for developing Marine Corps strategy, global posture, and force management while serving as the Operations Deputy in leading Service coordination with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the combatant commands.
LtGen Smith served as the Senior Military Assistant to three Secretaries of Defense, beginning with Secretary James Mattis. He concluded is active service as the Commanding General, I Marine Expeditionary Force, the largest warfighting command in the Marine Corps.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he also graduated with honors from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, the School of Advanced Warfighting and the Marine Corps War College, and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and the Aspen Institute Executive Seminar.
